Flexi Partial Denture
What it is: This is a tissue-borne (gum-borne) partial denture made of a flexible, light-weight thermoplastic material (no metal framework).
Pros:
- Highly aesthetic: no visible metal clasps, so it blends more naturally with your remaining teeth.
- Light and comfortable: the flexible material provides a snug, natural fit while remaining durable.
- Faster turnaround: typically only 2 visits are required to fabricate the denture.
Cons:
- Tissue-borne: it rests on the gums rather than being anchored by existing teeth, which can mean less stability in some cases.
- Because of its flexible design you cannot easily add extra teeth in the future if more natural teeth are lost — the denture may require a full remake.
- The flexible edges may cause slight rubbing or irritation of the gum tissue in some patients.
- Longevity may be less than that of a metal-framework partial in certain situations.
Metal Framed Partial Denture
What it is: A partial denture with a metal framework that anchors to your existing natural teeth (tooth‐borne), providing support and rigidity.
Pros:
- Tooth-borne framework: the metal clasps or attachments anchor to remaining teeth, often giving better stability and support.
- Flexibility for the future: you can add extra teeth to the denture later if additional natural teeth are lost, without needing a full remake.
- Durable: the metal framework tends to be more robust over time compared to flexible plastics.
Cons:
- Esthetics: the metal framework and visible metal clasps can be more noticeable, making them less discreet than a fully non-metal design.
- Fabrication time: typically takes up to 5 visits to complete, because of the extra steps (framework fabrication, try-in, adjustments).
- Might feel heavier in the mouth and may require a longer adaptation period.
- Some patients dislike the sensation or look of metal in the mouth.
